France international Anthony Martial is planning to sign a new contract with Manchester United with the hope that he can outlast manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old has struggled to earn regular gametime under the Portuguese since the turn of the year and his situation has only worsened this season after being dropped for the recent league meeting versus Tottenham Hotspur.
According to The Times, the Frenchman is prepared to end the uncertainty over his United future by signing a new five-year deal. However, the youngster has a personal motive towards the same decision and he remains hopeful of working under a new head coach in the coming years.
Martial has witnessed a difficult relationship with Mourinho since the start of 2018 and much of this has come about from the Portuguese displacing him for Alexis Sanchez following the Chilean’s arrival in January.
Since then, their relationship has further deteriorated with Martial delaying his return to pre-season due to the birth of his first child, and the club are said to have fined him two weeks wages for the unwanted incident.
At present, Mourinho has the backing of the board despite a poor start to the Premier League campaign but the Portuguese may not last for an extended period, should he fail to turn the club’s fortunes in the next few matches.
United are presently placed 13th in the standings with just three points from their opening three matches and the upcoming league trip to Burnley could be hugely decisive towards the club’s stance on the manager’s position.
Meanwhile, Martial has been deemed indispensable by the club’s hierarchy despite his alleged rift with Mourinho and it will be interesting to see how the Frenchman’s future paves, given he could potentially get to work under a new manager by the forthcoming year.
The former AS Monaco man was among the high-profile players alongside Eric Bailly, who were dropped for the 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Monday night, but the pair may return to the mix for the weekend trip to face Sean Dyche’s side.
