While Alan Shearer is convinced Rafa will stick around for another season in hopes of the ‘bigger picture’, Newcastle United conceded their business with Federico Fernandez becoming their seventh and last signing of the summer window, as reported by the official website of nufc, BBC Sport and Goal.com.
Rafa kept tabs on the 29-year-old Argentine ever since the Swans got the relegation, after being an admirer from back in the days in 2013-14 at Napoli, where the two were together in similar roles.
Fernandez has joined Newcastle on a two-year contract after making more than 100 PL appearances for Swansea during his four seasons at the Liberty stadium. He joined Swansea in the summer of 2014, prior to which the talented centre-back spent three years with Napoli from 2011-14.
‘’Speaking about his arrival on Tyneside, Fernández said: “It was a long day but I’m really happy to be here.
“It’s a new challenge in my life and I’m very excited to meet all the players and staff here.”
Manager Benítez added: “I know Federico well from our time together at Napoli and it was an easy decision to bring him here.
“He is experienced, a very good professional and he will add competition in defence.”
The player will wear the number 18 shirt for Newcastle United and will be eligible to face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.’’
